Blood In Blood Out
Label: Nuclear Blast
Release Date: October 14th, 2014
With a surprising interest, some bittersweet nostalgia, and a skull-bowl full of good greens, I popped this on with a curious anticipation and, dare I say, relish? After all, this was the shit I grew up with in my formative years (may explain a bit, heh): Total old school Bay Area Thrash (even though they were really from Richmond, CA, who cares)! This was fast, furious, LOUD metal, the shit that pissed off your parents when you were 13 (though mine never cared, at least it wasn’t drugs); this was the natural excitement of the first time listen. Hell, even original member from long, long ago Kirk Hammet ( I HATE YOU Metallica) pops in for a cameo solo. This might be interesting, even though I’ve found their past few albums, well, lame.
This being their 10th release, one would think that they would have stalled, staled, and completely just run out of ideas (Slayer . . . lookin’ at you — RIP JH). As mentioned above, it sure felt like that is where they were going, or perhaps even had already gone. But this album here, Blood In Blood Out, is a fine return to “classic form,” if you will. (Yeah it sounds cliche, and was mentioned in the far less obnoxious PR, but for a change this one was dead on target — hey, you do better.)
And why is that? In my opinion he return of original vocalist Steve Souza (yeah, the “TOXIC WALTZ”) guy. And his voice has lost not a shred of its shearing bestial brutality. In fact, he sounds as twisted and tormented as ever. Really, this album is True American Metal at its finest.
The song topics? Mostly classic thrash evil-drivel fun: serial killers, general anger, hypocrisy, zombies, and apocalypse. And decapitation, of course. All the stuff i dig. And Souza’s shredded barks lend to all of this this perfectly. Personally, I have never liked any of Exodus’ non-Souza albums. His best line on the album: “I don’t give a shit that I don’t give a fuck” (from the potent song “Numb”). Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
Guitarist Gary Holt’s twisting rhythms and fluid flows into classical melody are at times mind-melting, then BANG! back to the thrash. Of the album he has said: “This entire band could not be more proud and excited for this record to hit the US like an atom bomb . . . D-Day is upon us, time to go to war!”
This took me back, yet remains current, and may be their best album since their debut, Bonded By Blood, way back in 1984. This whole album is a modern metal (which usually pisses me off, not in a good way) masterpiece. If you are a classic thrash enthusiast, or just figuring out your roots, go buy this album. My favorite songs were “BTK,” a sick riff about a sick prick, great vocals, and “My Last Nerve,” a classic mosh-pit monstrosity of a song.
A great Halloween treat of an album.
