When I saw the band name I immediately, instinctively knew this could only be grindcore. VOMIT FIST, heh. Better name than most, I chuckled to myself as I put it on. What I got was an aural slice of clearly produced, bestial, but different, grindcore-ritualistic-stoner-metal that I was completely unprepared for. This is grind of a different sort, a monster of metal and bizarre blast-beat structures belonging completely unto themselves, and a blend of classic genres that far exceeds the obvious limitations of the majority of this tired subgenre.

And the vocals are audible! Holy shit! Audible and intelligent grind lyrics that deal with themes of “rebirth, apocalyptic chaos, ecstatic dermal auto-excoriation, transgressive ancient tantric poetry” and even more deep, unique ideas that so much further separate this from your standard grindcore-blister-nonsense-of-shrieking-and-badly-produced-violent sounds and porno-gore-misogyny (none of that to be found here — quite the opposite in fact — a welcome and much needed change).

In fact, the production by Nik Chinbokous is some of the most crisp, clean and best I’ve heard in the grindcore genre *(yet another metal-crossover of subgenres that, some I don’t particularly like, and some I do, one thing with “grind” is you never know just exactly WHAT you’ll get, but you have a pretty good idea). A classic New York Harcore/crossover element is very present here, bringing it up even further from the usual trappings of the grind genre. Being as they hail from the “Depths of New York City” this would make perfect sense, as would one other neat little tidbit about this trio.

Two of the three members are father and son! Now, realistically, THAT is kinda cool, and would again explain some of the old-school NYHC bits that crop up here and there. The band is comprised of (Father/guitarist/songwriter) Nick “Vurdoth” Didkovsky , (Son, drummer, founder) Leo “Lurkrot” Didkovsky, and rounded out by (long-time family friend and vocalist) Malcolm “Skrag The Screecher” Hoyt.

And Pops couldn’t be prouder of this trio (initially his son’s idea), having this to rave about the project: “My son Leo and I have shared a love for metal from the time he was very young. I recall him taking Judas Priest ‘Painkiller’ to school for show-and-tell when he was in kindergarten. Deep roots! We played a bunch of one-offs together while he was in grade school, cover tunes mostly, like ‘School’s Out’ for the fifth grade graduation ceremony, and later some Lamb of God, Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc. His drumming developed into something pretty sick through his experience at Tomato’s House of Rock. So one day, when the idea came about that he and I put a band together, I was really into it, not just because he’s my son, but because he’s such a killer musician.

Performance-wise, VOMIT FIST is one of the most demanding bands I’ve ever been in, and on stage it’s a serious peer-to-peer relationship. The parental hierarchy disappears, and we’re depending on each other as equals, to execute this music at a high performance level. It’s been a really deep and very intense experience working musically with Leo. Leo has very strong and lucid opinions about music. It’s very healthy for me to get straight, unguarded opinions from him as we work up new tunes, with all the merciless honesty that a kid can level at a parent.”

That’s deep, intense stuff, rarely (if ever) happens, and is a lot of what makes this album stand above the common drivel found so frequently within the genre. Also, I swear I hear a reference to the C.H.U.D. *(one of my all time favorite monsters, and a New York specialty) in the final song on the album, “Bloodfisher.” My personal favorite song on the album is the dark and wholly surprising, incredibly different (it almost comes off as one of COIL’s later works, oddly) piece “Story.”

Something different and true, in the most intense sense of old and new, I highly suggest you pick this up now because this is a special, one-of-a-kind thing. This goes far beyond grindcore, let not that foolish nametag deter you from hearing maybe the best metal album I’ve heard since PHILM a little ways back. Earlier on, in their description, they used the word “transgressive” to describe the topics covered, but that is indeed the right word for the entire project. This is Transgressive-Existentialist Grindcore *(heh, i do believe I may have accidentally coined yet another unnecessary subgenre term there, damnit) at it’s finest. This is different, has something to say.

Holy fukk, maybe something good may be happening to music after all. You just need to know which ditches, alleyways, and toxic waste containers in which to look sometimes, heh. Go buy this.
