Today’s Spotlight: LEGEND

Brian Helgeland is a director that rose to great prominence in 1997 when he won the Academy Award for his screenplay for L.A. Confidential.  But his success didn’t stop there.  Helgeland penned Mystic River, Man on Fire and Green Zone to name a few while stepping behind the camera to direct Payback, A Knight’s Tale and 42.  Helgeland is headed to the Toronto International Film Festival for the first time with his new film LEGEND starring Tom Hardy and, errr… Tom Hardy.

The new Mad Max (Hardy) plays both sides of identical twins Reggie and Ronnie Kray who were two of Britain’s most notorious gangsters throughout the 1950’s/1960’s.  Narrated by Reggie’s wife (played by Emily Browning) LEGEND follows the twins through their violent uprising of the London underground.  Amassing a resume of murder, corruption, assault and robbery, the Kray’s catapulted to celebrity status in London and mixed with American entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.

The always interesting to watch Tom Hardy ‘brilliantly delineates the distinct personalities of Reggie and Ronnie Kray’ and easily slips between the ruthless Reggie and the sociopath Ronnie giving audiences a glimpse into two men whose swagger was a front to disguise their ferocity.

Co-starring Emily Browning, David Thewlis, Christopher Eccleston and Chazz Palminteri, LEGEND premieres Saturday, September 12th at Roy Thompson Hall with additional screenings on September 13th at the Elgin Theatre and again on September 19th at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
