Today’s Spotlight: Keith Richards: Under the Influence
Would there be a better name for a Keith Richards movie other than Under the Influence? The iconic guitarist behind the legendary The Rolling Stones rock group is the focus of this intimate documentary directed by Morgan Neville who is coming off an Academy Award win for the documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom.
Early in the film Keith Richards muses, “I’m not getting old, I’m evolving”. The ‘evolving’ has been advancing for six decades and Under the Influence captures Richards evolving through a solo album (his first in 23 years) titled Crosseyed Heart.
Under the Influence follows Richards through the creation of his solo effort and interweaves interviews from his friends and peers including Tom Waits, Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel. The doc takes us to multiple cities while Richards hones his craft including Chicago and Nashville where he dives into his interest of country music.
Richards and director Neville will take the stage in Toronto after the World Premiere of Under the Influence for a live conversation that is sure to be as entertaining as the entertainer himself.
Thom Powers writes “With a film career steeped in music history, Neville is a perfect match for the subject. He partners with cinematographer Igor Martinovic – who employs a set of vintage lenses rarely used in documentaries – and sets Richards’ words to exquisite images.
Keith Richards: Under the Influence gets a single showing at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday September 17th at 7pm at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
