Michael A. Brown’s directorial debut “Julia” is releasing to the Theaters on October 23rd, just in time for Halloween! It is an intense Horror-Revenge tale of a woman who goes to great limits to get justice after being brutally raped and drugged by her captors.
Winner of the prizes for Best Actress, Best Editing, Best Musical Score, and Best SFX Makeup at the 2014 Screamfest Horror Film Festival, Matthew A. Brown’s dark thriller, JULIA, is a force to be reckoned with. A film so visually and emotionally resonant, it transcends any boundaries or limitations that are typically placed on the type of genre that the film falls under. Led by one brave and emotionally powerful performance, a story that hooks you in and doesn’t let go, and enough style to fill two movies, let alone one.
Starring THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE’s Ashley C. Williams as the film’s titular character, JULIA follows a young, soft-spoken plastic surgeon’s assistant, who falls victim to a brutal sexual assault. Left for dead, Julia makes her way home, and does her best to resume her life, but finds it impossible to do so. Too ashamed to go to the police or hospital, she resorts to cutting herself, and drinking alone in an underground bar. Several visits in, she overhears a group of women discussing an intense form of therapy specifically engineered for the most extreme cases of rape. When she approaches the women, she’s greeted only with laughter—but the trap has been laid, and soon after, Julia is accosted by SADIE (Tahyna Tozzi), the linchpin to the enigmatic DR. SGUNDUD (Jack Noseworthy) and his unorthodox and violent form of therapy, which is ostensibly about transcending the ego, so that no one will ever hold power over us again.
Through the training, Julia begins to awaken to her own most primal self, but is the doctor and his group perhaps more of a cult – just as intent on getting Julia under their control as the original rapists? What follows is an unblinking study of violence, revenge, castration and empowerment
