CHEMICAUST “As Empires Fall” EP Review by Vincent Daemon

CHEMICAUST

CHEMICAUST are: Damian Giron – Guitars Pierce Hall – Guitars Ernie Jaramillo – Bass/Vocals Ron Harris – Drums

So the AndroidVirus sent this to me, unexpectedly *(as these things so often are), in an typically infoless email dictating “When You are Ready.” *(I’ve been a bit behind here in the catacombs of the ROSETTA BONES vault due to various projects and life-obstacles – – – things should be getting back to normal, whatever exactly that is.)

What I received in this digital mailing is a five-song ep, titled AS EMPIRES FALL, from a Dallas, Texas Thrashmetal band called CHEMICAUST. I’d never heard of them, but from the intense, imposing cover alone I could tell that AV had once again found a jewel buried in the endless deserts in which he thrives. It’s a sickly poisoned-turquoise color photograph of two *(what look to be WWI) soldiers charging into battle while donned in *(most likely highly inefficient) bio-chem warfare suits and masks, their logo a sluicing, toxic neon green.

CHEMICAUST AS EMPIRES FALL EP Label: Self-Released Release Date: October 12, 2015

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve heard a band as influenced by classic, Germanic-Thrash the likes of SODOM, KREATOR, and DESTRUCTION as CHEMICAUST seem to be *(not a complaint), and to do it well at that. Along with old-school Bay Area Thrash breakdowns, an OBITUARY-like constant thunder of well paced and varying beats, some definite modern stylings leaning towards the “blackened” sound *(funny I should use “modern stylings” to describe an almost retroactive metal genre), and a unique vocal snarl that swells, sways, growls and screeches with *(not against) the music *(bringing to mind SODOM and Bruce Corbitt from the infamous RIGOR MORTIS – – – also hailing from TX), not only keeping true to the Elders of the Genres but sonically advancing with the ageless ages quite naturally.

At only five wickedly produced songs, it’s hard to garner the probable full range of what CHEMICAUST have to offer. On this ep, my personal favorites were the opening track “As Empires Fall,” which almost quite literally explodes out of the speakers *(I had no idea my system was up that loud when I started the ep). My other favorite was the short, sweet, classic crossover-tinged “Human Sacrifice.”

In all, I look forward to a full length from these thrash-masters. It’s great to see so many bands making a return to these sounds, albeit in their own ways *(ROCK JONG IL, THE MOIDALIZERS, VOMIT FIST). Perhaps it’s the breaking-down of a 20 year musical stagnation – – – everything is a circle, an Ouroboros, and all that is old eventually becomes new again, with the better of the newer artists retaining the integrity of what once was by building upon the foundations, as opposed to merely copying them.

*(Perhaps I am entirely overthinking this and am merely a Throwback, a dinosaur – – – who knows.)

I recommend CHEMICAUST’S AS EMPIRES FALL to all fans of classic thrash/speed/death/black/crossover metals, or anyone looking to put a lil whiplash in their day *(or neck). People, please, stop being cheap – – – support the underground and keep real Rock-n-Roll alive. Check out their site for discs, shirts, and combo packages.
