The 41st Annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set for September 8th through the 18th and will showcase nearly 300 films from around the world. From documentaries to horror films, TIFF will be the center of the entertainment universe and Intestinal Fortitude will be there to soak in the adventures and stories that unfold on the big screens in Canada’s largest metropolis.
But before the red carpets are vacuumed, the celebrities arrive with their entourages and the city transforms into a star-gazing mecca we will take time to focus on a new film every day that will be showcased at the festival.
Today’s Spotlight: The Belko Experiment
Director Greg McLean might not immediately be recognizable to most horror fans. But his films which include Wolf Creek, Rogue and Wolf Creek 2 surely are. His latest brings him to the Toronto International Film Festival for the first time with the world premiere of The Belko Experiment.
Showcased in the Midnight Madness series at the festival, The Belko Experiment stars Tony Goldwyn, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Rooker and Adria Arjona in a film that is equally savage and funny.
Thanks to a script by James Gunn (Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy), The Belko Experiment brings a group of American’s down to Columbia where their office environment is about to get deadly. As the drama unfolds, a voice through the office sound system informs the staff that they must kill a certain number of co-workers or be killed themselves. And as metal doors slam down trapping the group inside, it quickly becomes clear that they best do what the chilling voice wants lest they all end up dead.
Colin Geddes writes in the TIFF Program Guide, “McLean stacks the film’s office-turned-gladiator arena with a great cast of characters who make all the daily-grind clichés feel spot on. The Belko Experiment balances pitch-black humor and shocking violence with a timely mediation on morality in an age of rampant random violence”.
Getting its world premiere at the festival, The Belko Experiment screens Saturday, September 10th at 11:59PM at the Ryerson Theatre and then shows again on Sunday September 11th at Scotiabank Theatre.
