The 41st Annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set for September 8th through the 18th and will showcase nearly 300 films from around the world. From documentaries to horror films, TIFF will be the center of the entertainment universe and Intestinal Fortitude will be there to soak in the adventures and stories that unfold on the big screens in Canada’s largest metropolis.
But before the red carpets are vacuumed, the celebrities arrive with their entourages and the city transforms into a star-gazing mecca we will take time to focus on a new film every day that will be showcased at the festival.
Today’s Spotlight: Free Fire
One of my favorite directors working today is Englishman Ben Wheatley? Never heard of him? That’s ok. His films are an acquired taste anyways. From Kill List, Sightseers to High Rise, Wheatley is a master of mixing dark humor with dark content and somehow making the whole experience enjoyable.
Wheately’s new film, Free Fire is sure to catch some eyes. It stars Brie Larson (who won the Best Actress Oscar last year for Room), Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley and Arnie Hammer in a film set in late 70’s Boston. The synopsis is simple – a meeting of a group of IRA men and arms dealers in a remote warehouse goes awry when shots are fired. Knowing Wheatley’s traits, there is no guarantee any of the A-List names get out alive. And that’s what makes Free Fire a must-see at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Showcased in the Midnight Madness selections of the Fest, Colin Geddes writes, “Tight action choreography and even a tighter script by Wheatley and his filmmaking partner Amy Jump make the compact war zone of Free Fire crackle with heart-stopping action and offbeat humour, the witty banter ricocheting as furiously as the bullets. From the tensely atmospheric opening shots, it is obvious that Free Fire is another stunner from one of today’s greatest filmmakers”
Free Fire will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 8th at 11:59PM at the Ryerson Theatre and then repeats again on Friday, September 9th at 11:30AM.
