The Cemetery Gates Halloween Challenge Wrap Up by Xander Kane

Every year during October AndroidVirus and I take on the task of watching at least 31 horror movies in 31 Days. The catch is they have to be Films we have never seen before. Of course we watch horror movies year round but in October we go through as many as we can. Many of you may  know we discuss all the viewings on The Cemetery Gates podcast which is part of The Intestinal Fortitude Radio Network. This year I decided to write an article on my viewings so that if you didn’t listen you could still reference my viewings here.

This year I  watched 37 total films and all were new viewings except for 2. The movies come from all decades and stretch from 10 different countries of origin! I’m actually kind of proud it’s such a diverse group of films. Some years are much harder to get through but luckly this year was quite stellar.

It was so good in fact that I actually decided to hand out some awards!  I guess we will call them The Cemetery Gates Horror Challenge awards? That sounds fine I guess. Now let’s see who the winners are!

Biggest Surprise

Strange Events (2017)

The reason this one gets the honor is because antholgy films are really hard to make well.  This one delivers on all fronts without being all over place. It has all the spooky and fun moments you could ask for.

Biggest Dissapointment

The Dissapointments Room (2016)

Ok, this one has a great idea for a great ghost story but is handled poorly throughout. The odd choices made during editing the last act was confusing and lackluster.

Most Fun to watch

The Babysitter (2017)

It’s just flat out fun from beginning to end. It’s bloody, funny and has some really great death scenes. Netflix really did a great job on this original film.

Best WTF moment

Of Unknown Origin (1983)

If you ever wanted to see a giant rat hop out of a birthday cake here is your chance!

Best Guilty Pleasure Film

Bad Moon (1996)

Even though it suffers from many of those 90’s horror cliches it still delivers a good time.

Best Cinemetography

Ghouls (2017)

This Russian film has some of the best scenic shots I have ever seen in a film. That alone is worth sitting down and giving it a shot.

Best Performance

Jeff Goldblum (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) 1978

His character is annoying but turns out to be really entertaining and one of my favorite parts of the film.

Most Intense Film

The Glass Coffin (2016)

Most of the film takes place in a limo and offers up some really intense and uncomfortable moments that may make you squirm just a bit.

WTF Did I Just Watch

Byleth (1972)

A man is possessed by the Demon of Incest. I think you get the point here. Oddly it is a very well made film that’s just bizaare.

Best Overall Film

Demon (2015)

From beginning to end I was completley invested. Beautufully shot, acted, and a magnificent score. I really can’t say enough about it. This one is a must watch.

Best Classic Horror Film

The Innocents (1962)

Sets the standard for great ghost story films and it would seem many have taken inspiration from this one.s
